Taken at Delicate Arch, Arches NP, Utah. Canon 7D MkII/Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM.
Of all the photos I have taken, this is by far the one I worked the hardest for. The hike up to Delicate Arch is roughly 1.5 miles and there is little to no shade as you make your way up the slickrock. It didn't help that the wife and I aren't in the best of shape.
I will say make sure you have plenty of two things to do this hike. Time and water. The temperature was in the upper 80s and both of us struggled to make it to the top. We took our time and the payoff was worth it. As you come around the final turn, Delicate Arch is there waiting for you in all its glory. We were surprised at how windy it was when we turned the final corner. The entire time it seemed the wind was a steady 25 to 30 mph. If you ever have the opportunity to hike up to Delicate Arch don't pass it up.
While I could have gone around sunset I didn't for a few reasons. One is that in planning this panoramic photo, I wanted to make sure I could get the background still lit along with the arch. So we went in the mid-afternoon instead. Secondly, I didn't want to have to fight with the typical large crowds of visitors that normally appear. Lastly, I didn't want to try and make our way down the slickrock in the dark.
I will say that after coming down from the arch the ice cream that we got from the Moab Diner was some of the best we ever had.
